A Positive Outlook for Marketing Professionals

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the 2010 to 2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook giving advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales managers a positive job outlook with a projected 13 percent increase through 2018.

The job growth is measured by the growing number of goods and services that will need to stand out among the competition.  The marketing and sales departments are responsible for ensuring good and services are unique and thus less subject to downsizing.  The digital landscape is also ever-changing, proving that it is even more imperative to have experienced professionals help companies adapt to these changes and make sure their products and services reach potential customers via online channels.

The report stated the following growth statistics for managers:

  • Employment of marketing managers will grow about as fast as average at 12 percent between 2008 and 2018, and that of sales managers will grow faster than average at 15 percent over the same period
  • Advertising and promotions managers are expected to experience little or no change in employment from 2008 to 2018
  • Public relations managers are expected to see an increase in employment of 13 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is about as fast as average for all occupations, as organizations increasingly emphasize community outreach and customer relations as a way to enhance their reputation and visibility

The future is looking bright for advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales managers!
